The municipal location codes used by the Office of the Fire Marshal to identify municipalities in Ontario for the purposes of fire loss reporting have been revised to reflect recent municipal changes. The codes are based on Statistics Canada census categories, current to January 1, 1999. In many cases, this code will differ from the code you are currently using.
A list for incorporated areas has been provided to assist you in identifying your revised municipal code. The list is sorted alphabetically by the old municipal name under the heading "1998 Municipality and classification". The column entitled "1999 Municipality and classification" reflects all current municipal names including any recent changes. Revised location codes are listed under "99 Code".
Revised location codes for unincorporated communities served by fire departments have been provided in a separate attachment. Some unincorporated location codes include a code for area listed below the main location code. Both codes are required for reporting.
Please check the list and ensure that you are using the 1999 municipal code for Standard Incident and Casualty reports. Use of the new municipal codes will begin immediately. If your reporting system does not permit immediate change, please implement the new code before January 1, 2000. Reports submitted on or after that date must contain the revised code.
Some fire departments, in municipalities where it is felt that a more detailed breakdown of the area is required, assign additional geographic codes. These have not been included in the attached list. While we will continue to input these codes, assigning and monitoring them remain municipal responsibilities.
If you do not see your location in these listings, please contact the Applied Research Section of the Office of the Fire Marshal at (416) 325-3212.
