Fire departments report when they received the call and the time of their arrival on scene.

When the response time is calculated for structure fires data, the average response time for 97,404 structure fires with an injury, fatality or reported dollar loss was 5.9 minutes.  In 50% of structure fires where there was a fatality the response time was 5.0 minutes or less.

This underlines the significance of fire prevention, smoke alarm warning and escape planning in reducing fire deaths.
