Tell me more about the tests

The written tests for Component One, Component Two, and Component Three are comprised of multiple-choice and true/false questions, and are computer-scored. The first test has 150 questions; the second test has 120 questions; the third test has 120 questions. Test takers are given two and a half hours to complete the first test, and two hours each to complete the second and third tests.

Test questions cover information from the curriculum and reference books listed, including 4th Edition of IFSTAs Essentials of Firefighting http://www.ifsta.org/.

Do I have to take the tests in a certain order?

Component One must be taken first. Components Two and Three may be taken in any order, providing test takers are qualified.

Receiving Test Results

Test takers receive confidential letters at their fire department approximately eight weeks after the test date. A pass or satisfactory status is based on 70% or greater and there are provisions for re-writing the test if needed. Exact number and/or letter grades are not used. Test takers are responsible for informing appropriate people in their department of test results.

Receiving the Ontario Firefighter Curriculum Certificates of Achievement

Test takers who have satisfactory test results for Component One will receive personalized Certificates of Achievement with one gold seal.

Firefighters who have satisfactory test results for Components Two and Three will receive gold seals in their confidential test results letters.

Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Programs

Students enrolled in Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Programs are eligible for testing after completing all graduation requirements. We encourage you to attend the testing session organized by your college. When that is not possible, you may contact our office so we can schedule you for an alternate time and place.

The written tests for the Pre-Service Firefighter Program are very similar to the Component tests but are administered as Test A and Test B.
