ORILLIA FIRE SCENE INVESTIGATION UPDATE &
 PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
 January 26, 2009

The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) will host a news conference and photo opportunity at the Muskoka Heights Retirement residence fire scene in Orillia tomorrow. At that time, an update on the progress of the OFM investigation will be provided, as well as an explanation about the safety equipment worn by OFM staff.

From a visuals perspective, media can expect to see excavation of fire debris by heavy equipment and OFM staff wearing disposable TYVEK suits, hand and headgear and positive pressure ventilation systems. As a precautionary measure, the safety equipment will be worn throughout the investigation to protect against toxins and possible asbestos within the fire scene. A decontamination tent has been set up.

The OFM is appreciative of the patience, cooperation and assistance of residents surrounding the retirement residence; at times the roadways around the area have been congested with vehicles and equipment. As the investigation proceeds, the area is expected to become even busier. The OFM continues to work in partnership with the OPP, Orillia Detachment, Orillia Fire Department and other fire departments as far away as Collingwood.

This fire occurred last week and claimed the lives of two individuals. Eight more remain in hospitals through the area, five of these, are in critical condition. The facility was home to 23 residents. The OFM is in the preliminary phase of its investigation.
