Public Consultation on Residential Fire Sprinklers

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) is holding a public consultation to seek input on changes MMAH has proposed to Ontario’s Building Code. Included in the proposed changes is the requirement that residential fire sprinklers be installed in multiple-unit residential buildings over three storeys in height.

While Ontario has one of the lowest residential fire death rates in Canada, the OFM believes that residential sprinklers can greatly enhance fire safety and reduce fire losses in the province.

The public consultation will include six regional information sessions to be held across the province. At the sessions, MMAH will provide more detailed information about the proposed changes. The OFM will also attend the sessions to discuss fire safety practices and challenges, and common misconceptions about residential sprinklers. A schedule of information sessions is available here.

Also as part of this public consultation, MMAH has developed a public consultation paper outlining the proposed changes to the Building Code. The public is invited to review the paper and submit comments to MMAH by May 1, 2008. A comments form and information on how to submit comments also are available.
