TORONTO (August 12, 2008) - The Murray Road propane explosion site and other affected properties were transferred yesterday to the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) and other regulatory agencies who are working cooperatively to determine the cause of the explosion while the clean up continues.
The OFM Fire Investigation Services team on scene consists of 2 supervisors, 5 investigators and 2 engineers.
The OFM Fire Investigation Services team has not yet been able to access the area of origin. It has been confirmed that asbestos was found throughout the area of the explosion. A private contractor is in the process of cleaning up the area, block by block to ensure the safety of everyone at the scene.
Once the asbestos has been removed, the OFM will be in a position to carry on with its investigation at the point of origin. At this time, the investigation is focused on documenting the debris and assessing the extent of damage.
A body was found yesterday at the scene of the explosion. The Office of the Chief Coroner has been notified and has joined the investigative team now assembled at the site.
