Gravenhurst, ON - October 3, 2005 – The 18th annual Firefighters’ Memorial Day
service was held yesterday at the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst.
“Firefighters are key participants in building safe and prosperous communities
in Ontario,” said Monte Kwinter, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional
Services. “We need to thank them every day for their courage, their
professionalism and their dedication.”
The memorial service honours all firefighters, including those who have died in
the line of duty. In 2000, the Government of Ontario passed the Firefighters’
Memorial Day Act, establishing the first Sunday of October as Firefighters’
Memorial Day, commemorating those firefighters who have sacrificed their lives
on duty. The Ontario Fire College has hosted the annual service since 1988.
“The Firefighters’ Memorial Day service was an opportunity for Ontarians to
honour and remember all of the brave men and women who have put their lives in
danger to keep our communities safe from fire,” said Bernard Moyle, Fire Marshal
of Ontario.
Dignitaries who attended the event included The Honourable Monte Kwinter,
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Mr. Bernard Moyle, Fire
Marshal for Ontario, Dr. Fred McLennan, Principal, Ontario Fire College,
Reverend Dr. Jim Sitler, Chaplain, Ontario Fire College, fire service personnel
and their families from across Ontario.
