Minister, Fire Marshal To Open New Emergency Management Centre

Opening will include demonstrations of new equipment and resources

What:   Minister Kwinter, Fire Marshal Moyle and OAFC President Rob Browning will open the new facilities at the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst. Following the opening ceremonies, a number of demonstrations of the new facilities will be held. Demonstrations will include:
  • decontaminating people exposed to toxic products;
  • conducting internet research at the scene of an incident via satellite link-up;
  • feeding video images to offsite locations;
  • replenishing pure breathing air supplies;
  • classroom and learning resource tours.

Why:   In response to the events of September 11, 2001, the Ontario Fire College received funding to build an emergency management-training centre for firefighters and emergency responders. The expanded facilities include a new fire hall complex incorporating an Emergency Operations Centre that facilitates inter-agency training exercises, five new vehicle bays for fire trucks and emergency vehicles, and a classroom providing for the timely linking of knowledge-based learning and practical, hands-on learning; a new auditorium that can hold 300 people and be divided into two smaller classrooms; and a new library resource centre for fire service student-learners.
