TORONTO, Ontario, October 23, 2002
-- The recall earlier this month of Halloween candleholders that pose
potential fire hazards illustrates the danger facing our children and the
need for fire safety all year round, says Fire Marshal Bernard Moyle.
The candleholders, which are shaped like pumpkins, skulls or vampires, are
designed to be used with tea lights and are frequently sold in discount
stores. Several small fires as a result of flames from lit candles igniting
the holders have been reported to the Office of the Fire Marshal. No
injuries or deaths have been reported.
“Keep lit candles out of the reach of children and away from any combustible
items. Candlelit jack-o-lanterns should be placed where costumes can’t come
into contact with the flames,” Fire Marshal Moyle says. “Make this Halloween
a treat, and don’t be tricked by hidden dangers.”
So far this year, 10 children have died in fires in Ontario. Parents and
caregivers are reminded to take extra care to ensure Halloween is safe and
enjoyable for the entire family.
