ONTARIO FIRE MARSHAL ISSUES PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY
TORONTO, Ontario, July 14, 2000
-- Anyone applying solvent-based lacquer floor sealer to hardwood floors
in enclosed spaces must take appropriate safety precautions, says
Ontario Fire Marshal Bernie Moyle.
"Products of this nature contain aromatic organic
solvents such as toluene, which is highly flammable at a wide range of
temperatures, including room temperature, and must be handled with the
utmost caution," said Mr. Moyle. "I strongly encourage all persons using
these products to follow the manufacturer's instructions, eliminate all
ignition sources and ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at all
times."
Ignition sources can include pilot lights on gas
appliances such as furnaces, hot water heaters and dryers. Other
ignition sources include sparks from electric motors such as those in
sanders and fans. Static electricity can also be an ignition source.
The Office of the Fire Marshal is now investigating four
incidents that occurred over the past few weeks involving the
application of solvent-based lacquer floor sealer to hardwood floors in
private homes. These incidents have resulted in several injuries and two
deaths. In each case an ignition source was present, which caused an
explosion and fire.
Members of the public with concerns about the
composition or use of specific products should contact the manufacturer
for further information.
