FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ONTARIO FIRE MARSHAL URGES CONTINUED USE OF CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) DETECTORS

TORONTO, Ontario, March 1, 1999 - Ontario's Fire Marshal, Mr. Bernard Moyle, today urged all Ontario residents to continue using CO detectors.

"Historically, CO detectors have proven effective in saving lives," said Mr. Moyle. "I would strongly encourage people to continue using CO detectors in their homes."

Testing of CO detectors is carried out regularly by accredited agencies such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada. Recently, tests have been undertaken on a number of off the shelf CO detectors. ULC will comment on and release the results of these tests at the appropriate time.

"Clearly it is the responsibility of the manufacturers, as well as testing and certifying agencies, such as ULC and CSA, to address questions about this public safety issue in a timely manner," added Mr. Moyle.
