The Ontario Fire Code (O. Reg. 388/97 as amended) is a regulation under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997, that sets out various fire safety requirements for buildings in the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Fire Code stipulates that it is responsibility of the owner to comply. The owner may be considered to be any person, firm or corporation having control over any portion of the building or property under consideration and includes the persons in the building or property.

This Illustrated Commentary is complementary to specific portions of Part 3 and Part 5 of the Ontario Fire Code and is intended to assist in the interpretation and application of some of the requirements.

This Illustrated Commentary is neither a condensation of nor a substitute for the Ontario Fire Code. While care has been taken to ensure an accurate correlation with the Code, the examples and explanations provided are for purposes of illustration and constitute opinion only.

The Ontario Fire Code requirement(s) are reproduced in the text box at the top of each page. Where a defined word or term is used in the Fire Code, it is printed in bold to alert the reader that these terms or words are defined by the regulation and have specific meanings. The corresponding definition for the word or term is provided at the bottom of the page for ease of reference.
