“ROLE OF THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER”, A ONE-DAY COURSE

Over the years, the Public Fire and Life Safety Educator (PFLSE) Program has undergone some changes, including a recent “refresh” to ensure the content and methodology remain current. The PFLSE program meets the requirements of Chapter 5, Public Fire and Life Safety Educator 1, and Chapter 6, Public Fire and Life Safety Educator II, of NFPA 1035, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Public Fire and Life Safety Educator. Given that the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is a certifying entity accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard), graduates of the PFLSE program receive a certificate that includes a gold seal from the IFSAC and are also eligible for a certificate from ProBoard.

The PFLSE program also meets the requirements of Chapter 8, Public Information Officer, of NFPA 1035. ProBoard recently gave its approval to the OFM for the Public Information Officer level and it is expected that the IFSAC will do the same in the fall. As a result, future graduates of the PFLSE program and students who successfully complete the course, FPO 603, Public Fire and Life Safety, will be certified as public information officers and will be eligible for a ProBoard Public Information Officer certificate. Students who successfully completed the PFLSE program or the FPO 603 course in 2007, 2008 or 2009 will also be certified as public information officers.

Students who successfully completed the PFLSE program, the FPO 603 course or the FPO update course prior to 2007 can obtain certification once they complete a new one- day course titled “Role of the Public Information Officer”. Anyone interested in this course, who meets the above criteria, can choose one of the dates below and submit an Ontario Fire College (OFC) registration form to the OFC Registrar. The applicant’s fire department will be charged a $65.00 registration fee and invoiced at the end of the quarter.
