The Office of the Fire Marshal is notifying the public that on March 10, 2009, Maytag Corporation announced a voluntary recall of various refrigerator models. An electrical failure in the relay, which is the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
The number of affected units is approximately 65,000 in Ontario and 193,500 in Canada. The refrigerators were sold by department/appliance stores and homebuilders nationwide between January 2001 and January 2004.
Two incidents (with no injuries) were reported in Canada. Outside of Canada, Maytag received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
The recall involves certain Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Amana®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand side‑by‑side and top-freezer refrigerators that were made in the United States. Refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are NOT affected by this recall. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel.
