FIRE PREVENTION WEEK, OCTOBER 7-13, 2007

(External Distribution)

Every family in Ontario must learn and understand what to do when a fire starts. To underline the importance of this fire protection measure, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Practise Your Escape Plan.”

Representatives from the Office of the Marshal (OFM) will be participating at a kick-off organized by Toronto Fire Services, being held on October 9, 2007, at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. Children have been invited to take part in a variety of activities. After the kick-off, media will be invited to selected homes in the city where fire safety experts will perform demonstrations on home fire escape planning.

Fire departments in Ontario are encouraged to demonstrate home fire escape planning to their local media in selected homes in their communities.

A safe escape is only a simple plan away. Before a fire starts, every household should develop a home fire escape plan, taking into consideration the following points:

The OFM has recently prepared and distributed two public service announcements to community newspapers. The PSAs inform Ontarians about the requirement to have working smoke alarms on every storey of their homes and outside sleeping areas, and about home fire escape planning. Fire departments are urged to contact their local newspapers and request that these PSAs be printed. The PSAs can be downloaded from the OFM Web site at www.ofm.gov.on.ca.
