2006-19
Most courses of the Ontario Fire College (OFC), whether taken as diploma
program requirements or for hands-on practical training, include a pre-class
component. This component involves reading suggested texts and completing
assignments in preparation for the course. In order to complete the pre-class
component, a pre-class package of information and documents assembled by the OFC
is sent to each person registered in the course. The package includes
instructions on how to prepare for the course and often contains readings,
assignments, and a course outline. It is important to review the entire package.
In many cases, assignments must be completed prior to the first day of in-class
sessions.
Pre-class materials are now available at
www.ofmsps.ca/OFCEM, where they can be
downloaded. The OFC will no longer send by courier pre-class packages for all
courses that start after September 5, 2006. Only in cases where downloading is
impossible will hard copy pre-class packages be sent. Fire departments will be
reminded that pre-class packages are available on the Web site when they receive
confirmation of registrations.
The OFC recommends printing the materials for the courses 10 weeks in advance
of the first in-class session. This lead time should be sufficient to complete
the readings and assignments well in advance of the first day of class. Given
that the version posted on the Web site will always be the definitive and most
up-to-date version, it is strongly recommended that the pre-class package not be
downloaded sooner than 10 weeks prior to the first class.
The Web site also contains the Ontario Firefighter Curriculum and a wealth of
useful information on a variety of topics: OFC resource centre, prior learning
assessment, advanced standing, OFC policies and procedures, deportment, and
dress code. By reading this information and becoming familiar with the OFC’s
policies, facilities, prerequisites and registration procedures, anyone
attending the OFC can ensure that they will enjoy their visit and benefit from
their experience at the OFC.
