The Office of the Fire Marshal has been informed that Toyota Canada Inc. will be launching a new vehicle called the Prius. This vehicle is powered by a hybrid system and uses both electricity and gasoline power.
Special procedures and safety precautions must be followed to service the Prius vehicle and also to handle the vehicle after an accident and/or rescue people during an emergency. These procedures and precautions are explained in the Prius Emergency Response Guide. The guide was produced by Toyota to inform emergency response personnel to be cautious, when handling a damaged vehicle, of parts of the vehicle where high voltage electric cables and the high voltage battery are located.
Toyota Canada Inc. will be sending a copy of the guide to each fire department at the end of July.
