BASIC FIRE PREVENTION: A PILOT COURSE

(External Distribution)

The Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 requires that municipalities provide public fire safety education and certain components of fire prevention as part of their fire protection services. The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is pleased to announce that it has developed a Basic Fire Prevention Course. The purpose of the course is to assist municipalities, where required, to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver these services. The extent to which the services are provided is based on a municipality's unique needs and circumstances. Initially, priority will be given to smaller, rural fire departments.

A pilot course will be offered on January 7, 8 and 9, 2000, in East Ferris in the District of Nipigon and East Parry Sound. Other municipalities will be notified as soon as courses become available in their area.

The course is structured to give the most benefit to students, while limiting the amount of time in a formal classroom environment. A pre-course assignment, consisting of some reading and a basic risk assessment of the community, is followed by 29 hours of classroom instruction scheduled over two weekends. Students will also be required as a post-course assignment to conduct, with an OFM Fire Protection Advisor, a joint inspection of properties within their municipality that warrant a routine fire safety inspection.

Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement. If they are enrolled in the Firefighter General Level Curriculum, they may also receive credit toward two sections of the curriculum.

The course gives municipalities the opportunity to develop and implement the necessary fire safety education and fire prevention programs for their community through staff training and participation. For further information, please contact your OFM regional office.
