The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) has received a number of requests for fire safety information from municipal fire departments and tenants of apartment buildings. The OFM is pleased to announce that two new fire safety pamphlets and a door sticker have been prepared. This fire safety information was developed by the OFM in a partnership with the Ministry of Housing and in consultation with the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers' Association, the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council, the Fair Rental Policy Organization of Ontario and the Urban Development Institute. Over the past few weeks, the Ministry of Housing has mailed a copy of the two pamphlets and door sticker to every tenant living in an apartment building containing seven or more apartments. This distribution did not include tenants of condominiums (see below).
The first pamphlet, Fire in Your Apartment Building, outlines the actions to be taken in the event of a fire. The second pamphlet, Plan Ahead, Fire Safety in Apartment Buildings, enables tenants to assess the fire safety features in their building and to seek additional fire safety information from their building management and local fire officials. The door sticker, If You Hear the Fire Alarm and Cannot Leave Your Apartment, describes the actions to be taken by a tenant who cannot leave safely when the fire alarm sounds.
The distribution of the fire safety information may result in an increase in the number of inquiries from tenants in your community. Accordingly, a copy of the two pamphlets and the door sticker is provided for municipal fire departments as an attachment to this Communiqué;. All members of the fire department should be aware of the contents of the two pamphlets and door sticker.
The OFM is in the process of printing additional copies of the pamphlet, Fire in your Apartment Building, and the door sticker for municipal fire departments to distribute to tenants of condominium buildings. Another Communiqué; will be released as soon as the pamphlet and doorsticker are available for distribution. It should be noted that only a limited supply of the pamphlet, Plan Ahead, Fire Safety in Apartment Buildings, was printed by the Ministry of Housing, therefore, additional copies are currently not available.
