Constable Joe Macdonald Public Safety Officers’ Survivors Scholarship Fund

Communiqué 2016-12

May 2, 2016

In 1997, the then Ministry of the Solicitor General and Correctional Services created the Public Safety Officers’ Survivors Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships for spouses and children of public safety officers killed in the line of duty.  In 2002, the fund was renamed Constable Joe MacDonald Public Safety Officers’ Survivors Scholarship Fund, in honour of Constable Joseph MacDonald of the Sudbury Police Service, who was shot in the line of duty in 1993.

The purpose of the present communiqué is to remind you of the availability of the scholarship and to explain how to obtain an application form and application guidelines.   Please note that the deadline for submitting an application this year is May 31, 2016.

For the purpose of the scholarship, “public safety officers” includes all firefighters (full-time, part-time and volunteer) as defined in subsection 1(1) of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997.

Please bring information about the scholarship to the attention of any survivors in your community who may be eligible for the scholarship.

An advisory committee reviews all eligible applications and makes recommendations to the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.  Following approval and after having received all necessary documents, the Ministry issues a cheque to help cover the cost of tuition, textbooks, accommodations and living expenses.

Anyone who meets the criteria for this scholarship who wishes to obtain the application form (English or French) and the application guidelines (English or French) should contact
