COMPLIANCE SCHEDULE FOR
HOTEL FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS


Effective January 1, 2007 hotels are subject to full compliance with the Fire Code. This includes the existing Parts 1 to 8 and Section 9.1 of the Fire Code, as well as the new Section 9.9 Hotels, which addresses retrofit requirements for existing hotels. While the requirements of Parts 1 to 8 and Section 9.1, and much of Section 9.9 Hotels are effective as of January 1, 2007, some requirements have a phased implementation ranging from 1 to 5 years. An overview of the Fire Code requirements and the phased compliance schedule for Section 9.9 Hotels is provided below.

Parts 1 to 8

Parts 1 to 8 of the Fire Code address the application and administration of the Fire Code, general fire safety requirements for buildings, requirements applicable to hazardous material storage and processes, maintenance of fire protection equipment, and fire safety requirements specific to high-rise buildings and buildings under demolition. Hotel owners/operators should review the requirements in Parts 1 to 8 of the Fire Code to determine specific provisions that may apply to their building.

Section 9.9 Hotels

Part 9 of the Fire Code contains minimum mandatory life safety or retrofit requirements for certain classes of existing buildings including hotels (Section 9.9 Hotels). See A "Road Map" to the Fire Code for additional information. Retrofit Section 9.9 Hotels has compliance dates that range from January 1, 2007 to January 1, 2012 as illustrated graphically below.
