Effective January 1, 2007 hotels are subject to full compliance with the Fire
Code. This includes the existing Parts 1 to 8 and Section 9.1 of the Fire Code,
as well as the new Section 9.9 Hotels, which addresses retrofit requirements for
existing hotels. While the requirements of Parts 1 to 8 and Section 9.1, and
much of Section 9.9 Hotels are effective as of January 1, 2007, some
requirements have a phased implementation ranging from 1 to 5 years. An overview
of the Fire Code requirements and the phased compliance schedule for Section 9.9
Hotels is provided below.
Parts 1 to 8
Parts 1 to 8 of the Fire Code address the application and administration of the
Fire Code, general fire safety requirements for buildings, requirements
applicable to hazardous material storage and processes, maintenance of fire
protection equipment, and fire safety requirements specific to high-rise
buildings and buildings under demolition. See A "Road Map" to the Fire Code for
additional information.
Examples of existing requirements in Parts 1 to 8 that are immediately
applicable to hotels include:
Owners shall ensure that persons conducting annual tests and inspections, or repairing or altering their fire alarm system have completed an acceptable fire alarm training program. (See Article 6.3.2.1.)
Fire alarm technicians who conduct annual tests or inspections, or carry out repairs or alterations to a fire alarm system must complete a fire alarm training program acceptable to the Fire Marshal. (See Article 1.1.5.3.)
Damaged closures shall be repaired so that the integrity of the closure is maintained. (See Article 2.2.3.1.)
Closures in fire separations shall not be blocked or wedged open. (See Article 2.2.3.3.)
Sprinkler systems shall be maintained in operating condition. (See Article 6.5.1.2.)
Hotel owners/operators should review the requirements in Parts 1 to 8 of the
Fire Code to determine specific provisions that may apply to their building.

requirements for certain classes of existing buildings including hotels (Section
9.9 Hotels). See A "Road Map" to the Fire Code for additional information. Retrofit
