Key Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing assistance and advisory services to municipal officials and fire department officials regarding the delivery of fire protection services, continued compliance with the minimum requirements of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 (FPPA), risk assessment and optimization of emergency response capabilities
  • Publish fire safety guidelines for fire and municipal officials to use in making informed decisions on many aspects of fire protection
  • Provide the Ontario fire service with managerial tools to align their strategic directions with measurable outcomes, assess effectiveness, and develop master fire plans for communities in Ontario
  • Monitor the delivery of fire protection services in Ontario under the authority of the FPPA and make recommendations for improvements where warranted
  • Administer and monitor the mutual aid system and provide related consultation and training
  • In collaboration with the Ontario Fire College, deliver front-line training to fire department staff on a variety of subjects
  • Support fire prevention and protection in northern Ontario communities that lack municipal structure through the Northern Fire Protection Program
  • Provide assistance and advisory services to municipal officials and fire department officials on matters concerned with marijuana and clandestine drug laboratories such as health, safety, Ontario Fire Code and Building Code enforcement and prosecutions, environmental impacts, and safe remediation protocols for the buildings used in these illegal operations
  • Lead the Provincial Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives / Hazardous Materials / Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Emergency Response Support Program and administer its provincial partnership agreements
