Facilities Housing Vulnerable Occupants: Web Portal

Communiqué 2015-09

May 6, 2015

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) has developed numerous resources intended for the fire service, and owners, operators and staff of care occupancies, care and treatment occupancies, and regulated retirement homes. The purpose of these resources is to assist them in achieving compliance with Fire Code requirements for these facilities.

To facilitate access, the resources have been consolidated on the OFMEM Web site under the link “Care Occupancies, Care and Treatment Occupancies, and Retirement Homes”, which can be found in the menu on the home page. The resources have been organized under the following headings:

  • Announcements/Communiqués
  • Legislation/Directives
  • A Road Map to the Fire Code
  • Compliance Schedule
  • Approved Fire Drill Scenario/Mandatory Inspection
  • Guidelines
  • Training Materials/Information
  • Other Documents
  • Questions and Answers
  • Contact

In response to questions received from fire departments and facility owners/operators over the past few months, the OFMEM has provided in the section “Questions and Answers” clarification on a number of Fire Code requirements applicable to facilities housing vulnerable occupants. The OFMEM encourages periodic visits to the portal and the “Questions and Answers” section, as resources are updated on a regular basis. Enquiries regarding the portal and its content should be directed to Technical Services; staff members can be reached by telephone at (647) 329-1100 or by e-mail at FireSafetyStandards@ontario.ca.
