Fire Services Long Service Medal Investiture Ceremonies

Communiqué 2015-04

March 12, 2015

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) is committed to reviewing its programs to ensure they are run in an efficient manner and continue to be relevant, effective and sustainable. To that end, the OFMEM has reviewed its Fire Services Long Service Medal investiture program and is implementing a few changes as to how the program will be delivered.

From this point forward, investiture ceremonies will be held only for recipients of a 25-year service medal or a service bar for 40 years or more. In addition, the number of recipients per investiture ceremony will be limited to between 30 and 40.

The OFMEM will continue to invite to the ceremonies the following guests:

  • the mayor (or a designate) of the municipality in which a recipient serves as a firefighter;
  • the fire chief (or a designate) of the municipality in which the investiture ceremony is being held;
  • each recipient’s fire chief (or a designate);
  • a representative of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC);
  • a representative of the Fire Fighters Association of Ontario (FFAO); and
  • a representative of the local firefighters’ association in the municipality in which the investiture ceremony is being held.

Medal and bar recipients will still be able to bring one guest to the ceremony. However, the guests listed above will no longer be allowed to do so. These changes will ensure that the OFMEM can continue to hold medal investiture ceremonies to honour recipients and to recognize their significant contributions and achievements.

The OFMEM recently updated, with the OFMEM head office address change and some minor revisions, the three application forms used by fire departments to request the following:

  • the provincial long-service medal for the fire service;
  • the Fire Marshal’s long service award for fire services’ administrative personnel; and
  • service bars for the provincial long-service medal for the fire service.

The three revised forms will be sent to fire departments by e-mail in the near future.

Enquiries regarding the Fire Services Long Service Medal, the medal investiture ceremonies or the changes described above should be directed to Heather Wadden, Awards Coordinator, OFMEM, who can be reached by e-mail at Heather.Wadden@ontario.ca or by telephone at (647) 329-1066.
