This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Stay
Fire Smart – Don’t Get Burned” focuses on burn awareness and
prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.
This broad theme offers fire departments the opportunity to tailor their Fire
Prevention Week activities around specific fire safety concerns they have
identified in their community.
A successful Fire Prevention Week campaign can help change people’s
behaviours and attitudes. Many creative initiatives and activities have been
showcased in past issues of the Ontario Fire Service Messenger.
Fire departments are encouraged to develop partnerships in their community –
teaming up with local organizations can help to reach a larger or hard-to-reach
audience. The OFM has resources available on the web to assist fire departments
with their Fire Prevention Week activities. They include: Fire safety reference
cards that address 20 common fire safety topics. The cards provide correct and
consistent messages about each subject to assist in the development of public
education materials or when planning presentations or media interviews. To find
the reference cards log on to the OFM's
Public
Education Resources page and follow the links.
News release templates that can be modified and personalized to suit local
needs. Templates are available on a variety of different topics. To find the
news release templates log on to the OFM's
Public
Education Resources page and follow the links.
Public service announcements (PSAs) for television, radio and print. There
are PSAs available that address just about every major fire safety topic. For
example, PSAs relevant to a safe cooking campaign may include:
Up in Smoke
(video PSA)
Cacophony (video PSA)
Stand by your Pan (print PSA and radio
script)
Dinner’s Ready (print PSA)
A Dangerous Mix (print PSA)
Cool a
Burn (print PSA, in English only)
These PSAs and many others are available in English and in French, and can be
downloaded by logging on to the OFM's
Public
Education Resources page and following the links.
Fire departments can encourage their local media to use these PSAs during Fire Prevention Week, and throughout the year, to raise awareness about fire and burn prevention. Inquiries regarding the Fire Prevention Week theme or activities should be directed to Gina Pontikas, Program Coordinator, OFM, at (416) 325-3155.
