A safe campfire fact sheet describes how to build a safe campfire. Campfires should be built on bare ground. At least one metre of ground surrounding the fire should be kept free of debris and combustible materials. Keep a pail of water and a shovel close to the fire and never leave a campfire unattended. Campfires should be at least three metres from surrounding trees and 15 metres from the nearest buildings. When extinguishing a campfire, drown it with a pail of water, stir the ashes to expose any embers, then drown the fire again with a pail of water. Make sure the fire is out before you leave.Graphs show the most common causes of wildfires and identify the different categories of people responsible for wildfires caused by campfires in Ontario.
